Set a date — it really works!!
I have a second experience about setting goals and deadlines.
I shared earlier about the first time my family set a date to have someone for the missionaries to teach, in response to Elder Ballard’s 1985 talk. We said, “October” and sat back and waited for someone to come to us. Of course when we did invite someone the next February, he said, “That’s fine, but why didn’t you come last fall when I was laid up with a broken leg and had plenty of time?”
We learned then that the Lord will do his part, and we must do our part too.
That was in the 1980s, and it is still true now.
About six weeks ago, we set a date for Labor Day — September 2, 2013. This time, however, we took it seriously and prayerfully.
A month later at our family reunion, my cousin Bruce approached me. Bruce has no Church background.
One of his friends was recently baptized, and Bruce said, “I’m ready to settle down. I want to learn more about Mormonism.”
Since he doesn’t live near us, we called in the referral to the Church Missionary Department, and a full-time missionary called Bruce, talked with him and set up an appointment to for him to be taught.
As Elder Ballard promised, the Lord really does keep his promises.

Dear (anon),
I’m glad your contact accepted the missionaries in February. I had a similar experience praying, but my procrastination produced different results. I prayed and received the impression to invite a new friend to meet with the missionaries. That was in December. I procrastinated until April, then in a fit of conscience, contacted him. He said, “Back in December we were looking for a Church. We found a nice congregation with our daughter and are happy there. But thanks!” Ouch!
When the Lord gives us an impression we need to follow up right away. Otherwise the impressions may go to people He can count on. Lately I’ve been experimenting with inviting people to meet with the missionaries every day. I’m amazed that the Lord is helping me do it. Yesterday, it was the cashier at the McDonald’s take out window.
