I got that one wrong!
We just moved into a new house, and we have done our best to get to know our neighbors. One family in particular, we have become good friends with. We asked them to several church social activities, but for one reason or another it didn’t work for their schedule.
The husband seemed more interested in attending than his wife, and I assumed it was her who was reason why they wouldn’t attend. However, one night they came over for dinner, and I asked them if they would be okay if we blessed the food. They had no problems with it and I was surprised when the wife asked her daughter to fold her arms and bow her head.
After dinner, we all went for a walk and the moms fell behind — it was then that she told my wife, “I grew-up going to church, and my family always said grace before meals.” The mom said she stopped attending as a teenager, but now she is looking for a church to attend. She said her husband is against organized religion, but he would be fine if her and their daughter attended a church.
At the end of the night, she said that her and her daughter will attend the upcoming church social and that she wants to start looking for a church to attend.
Boy was I wrong!

Ha! Thanks for gracefully acknowledging your error 🙂
Turns out the platitudes are right … you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. You never know the fit until you try it on. (And so on.)
Stay open! Would love to hear how it goes when your friends attend the activity.
And next time you talk to the father, what do you think about asking what questions he has about God religion that he hasn’t gotten satisfactory answers to?
