All ‘nos’ and I feel great!
I have never felt like a successful member missionary before. Even though I know that we succeed when we invite, I’ve always wondered, “Would they have said yes if I did a better job of inviting?”
I decided to apply the “Ben” technique of collecting Nos. I set a goal to get five Nos by a certain date.
The day of the deadline, I only had four and had a wonderful experience where an opportunity to invite opened up.
All 5 people said no. But for the first time, I feel successful because I set a goal and achieved it.
And because, actually, all five experiences were positive and faith promoting for both parties involved. It was neat.
Soon I’ll move up to collecting yesses!

Great work! Isn’t it amazing how even “failure” boosts confidence? Inviting people is so much more invigorating than thinking about inviting people 🙂
Your question is great. It could be that people would have said yes had you been different in the conversation. And that’s the beauty of it all — a no isn’t a ‘no’ forever. You can talk to people again and bring something new to your interactions. You can be curious, finding out what interests them. You can be open, willing to hear any question they have. You can be exciting! Showing them confidence and energy that comes with being close to the Lord. And so on!
No matter what happens as you go collecting yesses, please share how it goes for you.
Nat, as often as I can I read through comments and experiences that readers share with us. Some of them are quite remarkable. Even better, however, are your remarkable replies to the comments. Your reply to the man who commented on the “Ben Principle” is profound. Your treatment of the principle is much better than my description on the book. We need to talk about how we can leverage your mind. Thanks for your wonderful work. Keep it up!! -Clay
