I tried it, and it is MUCH easier than I expected
I love sharing the Gospel because of how Christ has transformed my life.
It has never been easy for me! Due to rejection, I’ve felt constrained from doing what I would like to do — bring the joy of the Atonement and the association with Church members to others. I have tried and not had the success I hoped for.
Our bishop asked me, the ward mission leader, to read The Power of Everyday Missionaries. I was surprised at the directness of its message.
Assigned to speak on Sunday, I decided to give it a try on Saturday with two people I had wanted to invite earlier but didn’t know how. One scheduled an appointment. The other said he didn’t have the time, but would listen to the missionaries if they caught him at home.
I asked the first one if he ever saw our missionaries around. He said yes, but he wasn’t interested. I said, “Did you know that they come from another part of the country and and are here at their own or their family’s expense for two years? Every day they get up and knock on doors from morning to evening, looking for someone to share their message with. Imagine yourself in another part of the country you are not familiar with. You are knocking on doors — hundreds of doors. How do you think you would be received?”
“Not very well,” he said.
I told him I felt he was a good man and a visit with him would give them a positive experience. He could always say no. But he might find what I did when the missionaries shared their message with me. He could make it as hard on them as he wanted to.
He said, “I had no idea they came out here from somewhere else. I always thought they lived here with their families. I see the problem. I would be happy to listen to their message.”
The second one was a young single adult. I had called the YSA branch president the night before to see what activities were coming up. I was going to ask the young man what he was interested in, let him know what the YSA branch members were doing and see if he would accept an invitation to meet the missionaries.
But coming fresh from my first attempt, I had the same discussion with him that I did with the first person.
He said he was busy and didn’t want to schedule an appointment, but would listen to them if they caught him at home. I believe if I had followed my original impression, sharing the YSA activities, I would have had a better result.
I felt inspired the day before and took the course of least resistance in the moment. Nonetheless, he said he would listen even if he saw them on the street, which was also a positive result.
I believe the Lord will help us find these people and even let us know how to invite them. Next time I hope to do a better job of following the promptings.
I hope to invite every week now, maybe every day! Saturday was a very good day.
Please pass along my thanks to Bro. Christensen for a very helpful and inspiring book. I purchased the Kindle version for $5.95 for immediate download.

Brother Jim!!!
I will definitely see to it that Bro. Christensen sees your thanks.
OK I’ve got to say how excellent you’ve been. Most people choose dates to find someone for missionaries to teach months out — and you did it in less than a week! Who else is moved and encouraged by all this?
Your candidness about taking the path of “least resistance in the moment” is brilliant. It is so human and normal to rely on what’s familiar and what we think will work — because it worked before — when we step onto a stage or into a moment to act. Thank you for taking the effort to look at what didn’t work in that situation. I think what you saw is valid, and I say great that you want to try your inspired approach next time. You certainly can! Next time you see this young man or talk to someone else; find out what they care about! And then provide an invitation to match.
Thank you! Your example is a valuable contribution to our community and what you’ve done is opening new opportunities for your friends to be close to God and experience the direction of the Spirit.
Thanks Nat! I appreciate the thought in Everyday Missionary that inviting equals success. Monday, I remembered the joy I experienced on Saturday and prayed for another experience. I invited an elderly friend of mine who said, “I’ll think about it.” I invited. Success. And I felt God’s approval.
I also made two sales on my small website, which never happens. I’m reminded of President Benson’s statement: “When we do the Lord’s work, we get the Lord’s pay.” And we needed it. That night I put a recurring daily event in my calendar, “Invite someone to meet with the Missionaries.”
Tuesday I included that goal in my prayer and felt a great desire to share again. But I wondered how it could happen since I would be in another town cleaning an apartment. That day, I needed to ask directions of a pedestrian. He said he was going my way. I gave him a ride and invited him to meet with the missionaries in a natural way. Invitation made. Success.
When I read the title of the book “Everyday Missionaries,” I thought “Ordinary Missionaries” or “Member Missionaries.” But I am discovering there is a joy in sharing the Gospel by inviting our brothers and sisters to meet with the missionaries every day. I want to be an “Everyday Missionary.” And the Lord is showing me how I can.
Hey Jim, the promise in the beginning of the book is that the principles make the experience of sharing the gospel “natural and energizing.” And that’s what I see in you! I’m invigorated!
And now when I see “Everyday Missionaries” I will also think of it as “Every Day Missionaries.”
I’ve been using the web more in sharing testimony. We just started The Book of Mormon Two-Minute Challenge where members around the world record their testimonies of the BOM and we upload them onto a YouTube channel.
I need to incorporate the inviting into my life more. That’s where the real power is, in inviting people to act. Thanks! My mom just bought this book yesterday and hasn’t stopped talking about it!
Inviting people to act IS where it’s at!
Your project is amazing. Thanks for kicking it off. We’ll share it too.
